Wamen Kalapalo Negarotê is an important indigenous leader of the Negarotê people, from the Terra Indígena Vale do Guaporé, in Mato Grosso (Brazil). Her work combines intercultural education, community empowerment, territorial defense, and the preservation of her people’s ancestral knowledge.
Ela atua como professora na Escola Municipal Indígena Vale do Guaporé, contribuindo diretamente para a valorização da língua, da cultura e dos sistemas próprios de conhecimento do povo Negarotê. Sua atuação conecta educação formal e saberes tradicionais, fortalecendo uma pedagogia enraizada no território.
Wamen is also president of the Associação de Mulheres Indígenas Negarotê – Makanundaru, an organization that works to defend the rights of indigenous women, food sovereignty, economic autonomy, and cultural empowerment in the region.
Territory and Context of the Negarotê People
A Terra Indígena Vale do Guaporé It is located in the northwestern region of Mato Grosso and is part of one of the areas with the greatest sociocultural diversity in the Brazilian Amazon, inhabited by various povos Nambikwara, incluindo o povo Negarotê.
Nesse território, a vida comunitária está profundamente conectada à floresta, aos rios e aos ciclos naturais, com formas próprias de organização social, educação e transmissão de conhecimento entre gerações.

Como presidente da Associação de Mulheres Indígenas Negarotê (Makanundaru), Wamen supports collective efforts to defend the territory, promote cultural empowerment, advance the autonomy of indigenous women, generate community income, and preserve traditional knowledge.

Wamen também integra a governança da Fepoimt (Federação dos Povos e Organizações Indígenas de Mato Grosso), atuando na articulação de políticas e demandas dos povos indígenas da região.

In April, Wamen participated in the Women’s Leadership Roundtable organized by OGA, em parceria com Indique, Instituto Aldeia Verde e o Projeto Guardiãs do Bem Viver. The gathering brought together Indigenous leaders and allies from different territories in a space for listening, sharing, and collective empowerment.
Her presence highlighted the central role of Indigenous women as guardians of living systems of knowledge, deeply connected to the land, to education, and to the continuity of life. The circle reaffirmed the importance of women’s networks that bring together autonomy, collective care, and the regeneration of territories.
