The debate on climate change at COP30, held in Belém, transcends governmental negotiations to reach the most personal level of all: the plate. Amidst the Green Zone, the Loving Hut Vegan Cuisine stand stood out with a clear and urgent message: veganism is the most immediate and effective solution to curb global warming.
This initiative is globally led by the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association, a group that uses gastronomy and communication as tools for environmental activism.
A Global Journey for the Climate Cause
This Association’s commitment is not new. The Ching Hai International Association has brought its urgent message that dietary change is crucial for the planet’s survival to various Climate Conferences, and we at OGA have been following their work for quite some time:
- COP28 (Dubai): It was a meeting point and place for activism, where OGA met the team.
- COP27 (Egypt): Leader Ching Hai sent a crucial message to participants, highlighting methane (from livestock) as the most urgent target for rapid planetary cooling.
- Previous COPs (such as COP26 and COP21): The group was present with messages and informational materials, pressuring leaders and the public on the necessity of the vegan transition.
The Brazilian Link and Grassroots Persistence (Community)
The awareness work in Brazil is driven by dedicated volunteers, such as Ting Hsueh Chung, a Loving Hut volunteer in São Paulo.
In a statement to the Diário do Pará, Ting reinforced the group’s mission: “The idea is to show, practically, that veganism is viable and necessary. Through food samples, we want to demonstrate that it is possible to live well and still help the planet.”
The Cost of Conviction at COP30
The activism of Ting Hsueh Chung and his team is marked by admirable persistence. To secure a space in the Green Zone of COP30, the group faced significant difficulties obtaining credentials and, heroically, had to invest over R$ 30,000 (approx. 6,100 USD) to guarantee their small stand.
This dedication goes beyond the pavilions: the team also carries out essential grassroots work, such as distributing free vegan meals at the COPs, showing that ethical and sustainable eating can and must be accessible to everyone.
However, all this effort has been conducted without significant support, making their presence at COP30 a testament to pure conviction.
