Privacy Policy

A commitment to sovereignty

We are a grassroots organization committed to decolonial thought and to democratic access to diverse knowledge. Our relationship with you is built on trust and sovereignty.

Today’s internet was built on surveillance and data extraction, a deeply colonial logic. Protecting individual and collective autonomy, online too, is part of our mission. For us, privacy is a political and ethical commitment to self-determination and collective care, not just a legal requirement.

In the simplest terms: we collect as little as possible, and we never sell or share it.

1. Browsing: as little as possible

You can browse the site without giving us any personal data. We use Matomo Analytics to understand, in aggregate, how the site is used. That data stays with us, is never sold or shared, and you can opt out at the end of this page.

  • No personal data: browsing does not record your name, email, phone number or location.
  • No ad trackers: we don’t use tracking pixels, web beacons or browser fingerprinting. The few cookies the site uses are described below.

2. When you send us data

We only receive personal data when you choose to send it, through a form or by email.

A. Forms

  • Consent: each form explains what the data is for and asks for your explicit permission.
  • Only what’s needed: we ask only for what the purpose requires, such as your name and email.
  • Internal use: your data is never sold, rented or shared for commercial purposes. Only the OGA team and partners on the initiative you chose can access it.
  • Secure storage: we store it securely and delete it once it’s no longer needed.

B. Email and donations

  • Email: we use what you write only to reply to you.
  • Donations: donation links take you to an external payment processor, which follows its own policy. We don’t process or store payment details.

3. Respect for the people we feature

We share the knowledge, reflections and images of people and communities around the world. That’s why:

A. Projects and photos

  • Consent first: photos of projects in Spotlight or Causes are published only with the explicit, written consent of the people and communities shown.
  • No metadata: before uploading photos, we remove anything that could identify someone, such as GPS location.

B. BIPOC voices and perspectives

  • Informed consent: audio, video and writing featuring BIPOC voices in Voices, Insights and Offerings are published only with the speaker’s explicit consent, for non-commercial use. Reciprocity, not extraction.

4. Content from other platforms

Many sections link to or embed content from other platforms.

  • Media: in Voices and in Offerings (Witness and Orals), platforms like YouTube or Bandcamp only start tracking when you click “Play” or follow a link. Whenever possible, we use privacy-friendly embeds. After that, the platform’s own policy applies.

5. Changes to this policy

This policy is a living document.

  • Annual review: if we ever need to significantly change how we use form data, we’ll let you know clearly and ask for your consent again.
