Tapi Yawalapiti carries within him the ancestral strength and wisdom of the Upper Xingu. A leader, guardian, and cultural bridge, he walks in the footsteps of his late father, Chief Aritana Yawalapiti — one of Brazil’s most revered Indigenous leaders and a lifelong defender of the Upper Xingu territory and its peoples.
Through his work at Instituto Aritana (Instagram), Tapi continues his father’s vision: protecting the Upper Xingu’s forests, rivers, and cultural legacy, while advocating for Indigenous autonomy and sustainable coexistence. His leadership embodies a balance between tradition and modernity — the rootedness of the forest and the awareness of the global challenges we face.
Legacy & History
Recognized internationally, Tapi has been featured in major outlets such as Reuters, which documented the Kuarup funeral rites held in honor of Chief Aritana Yawalapiti — a sacred ceremony celebrating the life, leadership, and wisdom of Upper Upper Xingu’s great chief. Al Jazeera also highlighted Tapi’s efforts to preserve the Yawalapiti language and cultural identity, emphasizing how his people’s resilience continues to inspire Brazil and the world.
At COP28 in Dubai, Tapi represented the Upper Xingu peoples with his characteristic grace — exuding a rare blend of ancestral authority and openness to dialogue. His leadership transcends borders, reminding the world that the survival of the planet depends on listening to those who have long known how to live in balance with it.
As head of the Yawalapiti people and a leader within the Território Indígena do Xingu (TIX), Tapi’s mission extends beyond defense; it is regeneration. Through cultural revitalization, education, and sustainable livelihood projects, he and his community build pathways for future generations to live with dignity and autonomy.
