Carlinha Yanomami: Where Feminine Ancestral Wisdom Meets Leadership

At the heart of the Amazon rainforest, in the Yanomami Indigenous Territory of Maturacá — where the Cauaburis River weaves life through twelve vibrant communities — Carlinha Yanomami leads with courage, wisdom, and an unwavering vision for women’s empowerment.

As president of the Yanomami Women’s Association Kumirayoma (AMYK) for the 2024–2027 term, Carlinha has become a driving force for change, creating bridges between tradition and transformation. AMYK was founded in 2015 to strengthen Yanomami art, protect their ancestral territory, and promote the well-being of women from the Cauaburis River region, in the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Amazonas, Brazil.

Born in 1981 and raised in the village of Maturacá, Carlinha has long been attuned to the challenges faced by Yanomami women — from limited access to resources to the daily struggle for recognition and equality. Her leadership is defined not only by advocacy but also by action. Despite AMYK’s limited resources — with no permanent headquarters, boat, or motor — Carlinha tirelessly seeks partnerships and collaborations that can help reduce vulnerability and strengthen the autonomy of Yanomami women.

Under her leadership, AMYK has developed several strengthening projects:
Handicraft Workshops that generate income and celebrate traditional basketry.
Associativism Training that encourages active participation and transparent management.
Health and Well-being Programs focused on women’s health and preventive care.
Leadership and Empowerment Activities that nurture confidence and self-determination among Yanomami women.

These initiatives have created a ripple effect throughout the region. Women from Maturacá and neighboring villages now take part in decision-making processes with greater confidence and autonomy. Through AMYK’s work, the transmission of Yanomami traditions and ancestral knowledge is not only preserved but strengthened through collective leadership.

The name Kumirayoma carries deep meaning — it refers to a spiritual, aromatic woman of youthful beauty who represents all women in the universe and in the forest. Guided by this spirit, Carlinha embodies the power of women who lead with care, persistence, and ancestral strength.

Today, AMYK is seeking partners and allies to expand its courses, strengthen its leadership programs, and build its own community headquarters — a dedicated space where Yanomami women can continue to meet, learn, and lead together.

At OGA, we are honored to highlight Carlinha Yanomami as a living example of what grassroots leadership looks like when it is rooted in the land, nourished by community, and guided by purpose.

If your organization would like to support AMYK or collaborate with Carlinha and her team, connect with us through OGA Web.
