Ashira Darwish: Healing as Resistance

Ashira Darwish is a powerful and inspirational voice whose work perfectly aligns with the mission of OGA Voices, embodying the core principles of resilience, collective action, and shedding light on often-silenced narratives. As a Palestinian trauma healer, journalist, singer, activist, and survivor of Israeli detention, Ashira’s journey is a testament to the fact that healing itself is an act of resistance.

An Inspirational Journey: From Journalism to Trauma Healing

Ashira Darwish spent 15 years working as a TV and radio journalist and researcher for world-renowned organizations, including the BBC, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch. This work laid the foundation for her deep understanding of human rights and conflict.

However, her life took a transformative turn after she personally experienced severe trauma, including full-body paralysis from a severed spinal cord in 2012 due to beatings during her detention by Israeli forces. Her healing journey led her to create a specialized, culturally sensitive healing modality called Active Meditation. You can learn more about her personal and professional philosophy on her website.

  • Catharsis Holistic Healing: She is the founder of this trauma therapy project, which pioneers a type of Sufi active meditation, drawing its roots from ancestral and Indigenous knowledge.
  • Healing Focus: Her work specializes in addressing the trauma experienced by Palestinians, focusing on ongoing stress disorder—the continuous state of trauma under occupation—and has been recognized for its efficacy in treating PTSD and continuous trauma.
  • Recognition: She was named one of the most inspirational women in Palestine by the Build Palestine organization in 2023. Connect with her professional network on LinkedIn.
